| My paper, "The Communal System of the Amana Colonies: Impact of Hired Labor, 1884-1932," explores how hired hands, or "tagloehner" contributed to the success of the communal Amana Colonies. A large portion of my research was conducted with the help of the Amana Heritage Society’s extensive archives and helpful staff. Crucial to my research was access to primary source documents such as federal and state census records, Society labor records, and translated Society meeting minutes. Another valuable resource was secondary source materials such as books, and research completed by other historians. My research was presented to the History Department at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in December 2006 in fulfillment of a research seminar. My hope is to have my work published will be realilzed this spring when my paper is published in the Communal Societies Journal. Check out this website’s Photo Gallery to see images from Amana’s past and photographs of hired hands. |
